Renault officially launched the Alpine Formula 1 team today. A first design of the new car was presented during an online presentation, but only as an interim livery. The official color scheme will not be shown until the launch of the new car.
Fans and observers at least got a first taste of Renault’s new appearance under the new Alpine name in the premier class. The car is painted in dark colors, and the French national colors can be seen in large letters on the engine cover.
The name of the race car also changes with the restructuring: the successor to the R.S.20 is called A521. The designation is made up of “A” for Alpine, A500 for the French company’s first Formula 1 racer from 1975 and 21 for the year.
This is intended to herald the transition to a new era. The racing team, which has around 1,200 employees, wants to use Formula 1 as a global marketing platform and establish the new name.
In the future, not only the Formula 1 team will belong to the Alpine umbrella brand, but also the Renault Sports Cars division. Together with the original brand, three divisions will thus be united under a new name, says the new Alpine Managing Director Laurent Rossi with pleasure. All Alpine activities are to become profitable by 2025, is the strategic goal.
Motorsport will be used to give the brand a new “powerful identity,” explains Antony Villain, Alpine design director. “With motorsport at the heart of our process, graphic identity is key.” The interim livery, he said, is an “initial nod” to this new identity.

“Some of the structural graphic elements will remain on the race livery, while others will change,” he said. The oversized Alpine emblem in the three-color graphic is the first clear symbol of the brand’s identity in motorsport.”
The blue, white and red colors refer to the colors of the French, but also British, national flag – after all, the team’s headquarters remain in Enstone. The engine factory is located in Viry-Chatillon. The black is intended as a tribute to the A500.
Who will lead the team into the future as the new team boss, however, remains unclear even after the new presentation. Surprisingly, the separation from Cyril Abiteboul was announced a few days ago. Ex-MotoGP manager Davide Brivio is to take a leading role alongside Marcin Budkoswki.
The Alpine brand – the name was derived from the Alps – was founded in 1955 by Jean Redele. The brand enjoyed particular success in rally racing and in the endurance racing of the 1970s. At that time (1973), the small carmaker was taken over by Renault.
